When you book a photoshoot, one of the most exciting (and sometimes daunting) decisions is choosing the right setting. In New Brunswick, we are incredibly lucky to have a landscape that shifts dramatically with the seasons, offering everything from rugged coastlines to lush, deep-woods greenery.
The location is more than just a background; it’s the stage that sets the mood for your memories. Here is a guide on how to choose the perfect spot for your next session.
1. Consider the "Vibe" of Your Family or Relationship
Before looking at a map, look at your own style. What feels most like you?
The Adventurer: If you spend your weekends hiking, a trail in Fundy National Park or a rocky lookout might be the perfect fit.
The Romantic: Soft tall grass, rolling fields, or a quiet riverbank at sunset offer a timeless, ethereal feel.
The Urbanite: If you love clean lines and architecture, the historic brickwork and colorful storefronts of downtown Fredericton or Saint John provide a chic, sophisticated backdrop.
2. Lean Into the Season
Living in New Brunswick means our "best" locations change every few months.
Spring & Summer: Look for lush greenery and blooming wildflowers. The coastal light near Shediac or St. Andrews is particularly beautiful during the "golden hour" in the summer.
Fall: We are famous for our autumn colors. Locations with heavy deciduous growth—like the Saint John River Valley—provide those iconic fiery reds and burnt oranges.
Winter: Don't be afraid of the snow! A snowy evergreen forest or a frozen shoreline can look like a minimalist dream, especially when paired with cozy textures and warm layers.
3. Think About Movement and Texture
The best photos happen when you feel free to move. When scouting locations, I look for:
Wide Open Spaces: Beaches at low tide or large fields allow for running, dancing, and authentic interaction.
Natural Textures: Think of the contrast between smooth beach stones, weathered wooden boardwalks, or the rough bark of an old-growth forest. These elements add depth to your images.
4. Lighting is Everything
The most beautiful location in the world can look flat in the wrong light. Most of my sessions take place during the Golden Hour (the hour before sunset). When picking a spot, consider where the sun will drop. A location that features a high hill to the west might lose its light earlier than a flat beach.
5. Comfort and Accessibility
Especially for families with young children or those bringing along a pet, accessibility matters.
Is there a long hike involved?
Will there be a lot of wind (common on our coastlines)?
Is there a spot to change or a nearby shelter if the weather turns?
Pro Tip: Don’t feel pressured to find a "famous" landmark. Sometimes a quiet, overgrown corner of a local park or a private backyard has more sentimental value and better light than a tourist destination.
6.The Ultimate Personal Backdrop: Your Own Home
Sometimes, the best location isn't a destination at all—it’s the place where your life actually happens. In-home sessions are some of my absolute favorites for a few reasons:
Total Authenticity: There is a unique comfort that comes with being in your own space. Whether it’s snuggling on a velvet sofa, gathering in a kitchen with beautiful natural light, or playing in the backyard, these photos capture your "real life" in its most beautiful form.
Weather-Proof: New Brunswick weather can be unpredictable. An at-home session takes the stress out of a rainy forecast or a sudden cold snap. We can lean into the "moody" atmosphere of a rainy day indoors with soft lamps and window light.
Showcasing Your Style: You’ve put heart into your home—from that dark accent wall to your favorite woven textures. Using your house as a backdrop makes the session a true reflection of your family’s aesthetic.
Note for the Homebodies: Don't worry about your house being "perfect" or "Pinterest-ready." I look for pockets of great light and interesting textures. Often, a simple bedspread or a well-lit corner is all we need to create magic.
